UNWTO Hosts Africa's First Gastronomy Tourism Forum

From July 26-28, 2024, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, will host the inaugural UN Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Africa. Organized by UNWTO, the Basque Culinary Center, and the Government of Zimbabwe, the event will explore gastronomy tourism's potential to enhance Africa's global tourism competitiveness. The forum aims to highlight Africa's culinary heritage, promote sustainable development, and encourage cultural exchange and community empowerment. Featuring discussions, knowledge exchange, and best practices, the forum will benefit local communities and the environment.
Food Tourism in Africa: A 2024 Perspective

In 2024, Africa's culinary scene is thriving, attracting global food enthusiasts. South Africa’s wine industry, valued at $3 billion, has seen a 15% annual increase in tourism. Ghana and Nigeria’s flavourful dishes, such as jollof rice and fufu, are drawing more international tourists. Ethiopia's cuisine, with injera and spicy stews, and Kenya’s diverse food scene are also significant attractions. Moroccan cuisine, with its fragrant spices, continues to be a major draw in North Africa. Food tourism in Africa contributes approximately $250 billion to the global economy, promoting sustainable, community-based tourism.
